Just wondering, are boys allowed to dance Slip jigs?? I always thought they were not allowed, and my school doesnt do this, but i was at a feis last weekend and a boy in the age group under me was in the Slip jig competition, and won it!!
Is this weird? I'm not tryin to be sexist or anything, I just thought it was rules!?

I know that Brent, my teacher, won't let the boys do slip jigs in competition. Not even in beginner levels. Instead he teaches them the single jig. But I don't know if it's against any official rules, probably at the discretion of the teacher. Oh well, good on the boys that can do them and do them well, cuz even for a girl they aren't the easiest to get down. :)

Yer I just checked my organasation's website, it plainly said, boys are not to be entered in the slip jig competition lol. I dont know why they can't dance it, it may be thats its an elegant dance or something, but boys can do elegant can't they? ;)

Yeah, its just soo weird that they would let him compete in a slip jig! I have a little brother who just started dancing and he said that my teacher had him learn the slip jig. I thought that it was a girls dance and boys couldn't learn it.

I was taught that boys NEVER do Slips, even though I reckon I've seen it happen.

I'm a boy and I do Slip Jigs and Single Jigs, I don't see why they shouldn't. Sexism to the max?

In South Africa boys can do slip jigs up to any level they like, but they usually choose not to in competitions, simply because there are usually other dances they like more!

In CRN boys do dance the slip jig. If I'm correct they first didn't do it, but now we are.

Boys should do them anyway at dance class just to keep up with the current slip jig material and if they ever take a teacher's exam they need to know how to dance and teach one.

Boys are allowed to do the Slip Jig.
But it just depends what your School does with them and their Dances.
But if they where to do the Slip Jig they can stop doing it when they get into Prizewinner.

I'm sorry, what I meant was that the boys in the organization I'm from only do slip jig in those levels. sorry again for the mis understanding.

In CRN boys are aloud to do a slip jig. Most boys do a reel in their championship, but this year I did a Slip Jig in my championship. If a boy does a slip jig, then the slip jig could be better than his reel.

I am in an cominisuin.(I don't know how to spell it) and my brother quit slip jig when he got to novice in it. It is considered a more feminine dance to us and I haven't had a boy dance in my slip jig for a very loooonnnnggg time! it's interesting to learn different things like that!

Boys in Australia don't do slip jigs, but at my school they still have to dance it in class! Boys are so elegant, they dance it better than me!

Boys are allowed to do the slip jig, but most choose not to! It is really elegant and smooth and as we all know boys are not elegant and smooth when dancing!:D

In my School when you move out of Novice for your Slip Jig if you are Boy you can stop doing it.
Slip Jigs do seem indeed more for the Girls.
But it all depends with the coreography.
But I personally think the Reel is more of the Boys Dance.
Then why do the Girls have to do the Reel?
I know it is what it is.
But it is the coreography that matters.
It makes up the Dances.
And sometimes it depends on the Teacher.

It seems that this is the bottom line: It's not that it's against the rules for boys to do the slip jig as such, it's rather that they (or their teachers) choose not to do it as it's such a feminine dance. But they learn it as beginners or when they're little as it's good to know all the basics before you move up. To me the light jig is also a very girly dance as it's so light and skippy, like a fairy. There will always be dances that some people love and others can't stand, but they're all good for us! :D

i'm from australia and i've never seen any boys doing slip jigs. my dance teacher told me that it was a traditional thing. in the past when the girls danced they lifted up their skirts so you could see their slips and thats why they called it a slip jig because of the slips and only the girls do it beacause boys didn't wear slips.

I'm a beginner and my little brother is too. My brother isn't learning the slip jig in my school. My teacher said it's a girl's dance. I don't think it's sexest, it's not like boys don't know how to do it or know how to be graceful! It's just a girl's dance! If you think about it, Irish dance is graceful! whether you are doing the slip jig, the light jig, the reel, or any soft shoe dance you have to be graceful!
I never seen a boy do the slip jig, but it doesn't bother me. Whatever floats your boat irish dance world, i'm just here to learn how to dance!

I've always thought of slip jig to be more graceful and slow. He will need it if he want to be in Oireachtas. In the Eastern Canadian, you have to be able to, so I guess it really depends. I think that is sexist because I am absolutely horrible at slip jig because I'm not graceful at all (I'm a girl). It all comes down to personal preference. Your brother should definently try slip jig.

There aren't any guys in my class, nor do I know the slip jig, but I do know that the first part of The Countess Cathleen is a slip jig, and the Countess is all about feminine power. :D
