grands battements
They're a ballet step, if you hadn't realised.
Basically, just stand by a barre or something (banisters are good, picture rails, worktops) and hold it lightly with one hand. Turn out your feet and lift the leg that's not next to the barre up to about a 90 degree angle (slowly). Hold for a second or two and put it down again. Make sure to bring your feet back into a folded position!
You can do these to the front, to the side or to the back, with your feet crossed, in a V, apart (still turned out), in front of each other, or folded in 5th position (I can't describe it!).
As we're Irish dancers, hands by sides, though if you know any ballet feel free to do the arm movements as well.
The winner is whoever does the most.
You have to keep your stomach pulled in, your butt pulled in and your back straight -- head up! Don't do these too quickly as that's pointless.
Any questions?
I'll just go hunt for a video.
