Hey everyone, my school has this job offer for kids and it's called corn detasseling. It's basically when you go through a corn field and pull the tassels off of corn stalks. I heard that the work is hard and very tiring. But i seriously need money for Irish dance. and I heard that it pays well ($7.50/hour not counting raises and we work seven to nine hours a day). I don't know if I should do it or not.:( Any advice??

is there a way you can do a trial period or do you get locked into it? it's totally up to you, but try it first if you can. good luck!

I agree with FeisQueen. Try it out before you do it!

But I'd also like to say there are better ways to raise money then having a job. :P

Seven to nine hours a day is a lot. An adult's full time job usually is eight hours a day! I'm assuming you're still in school, so I can't imagine that working out very well. Are you sure that it's not seven to nine hours a week?

It can't possibly be seven to nine hours a day. That is against child labor laws.I'm guessing 7-9 hours a week.I would definitely try it out.

it's in the summer so i should be able to make it work. and it's only over 3 weeks, so im pretty sure its 7 to nine hours. It's n orginization and I guess it's legal, there are 13 year olds who do it:o

Maybe that time is counting breaks or something.

If it's only for three weeks, maybe it would be a good experience, though. Right now, I'm having troubles finding a job because the economy is bad and no one wants to hire someone who's never had a job before. I just think it would be a good idea to find out more about it to make sure it's legal and safe. Is there someone at your school who has done it before that you can ask about it?

I think it is. It said we would leave around 6:30 in the morning and we would come back around 4:30

You should ask your Parents of course.
Once YOU did maybe you should try out how it feels to do work that long.
And are you still in School?
If so this would really conflict with it.
I am just saying..:)
I wish you the best of luck and I hope you can raise money for ID.

I would do it! :p

I need a job or some way to make money also.
I have to get my school dress made and it cost $650...You should have my dad's face when he heard that!!! But I need one in order to compete this Summer.

I know!! me too! my school dress is $600 and shipping will cost extra. I have to get mine eventually, too. And if you live in a rural area with lots of corn there should be some corn detasseling jobs around. Or you can babysit. Sometimes that's the worst job ever (last time I babysat the kid bit my foot!!!). But it's an easy money maker:)
