My parents are really freaked out over my weight, and have declared that if I drop below 100 pounds, I cannot go to dance class until my weight's back up.
I'm currently exactly 100 pounds, if not less. I'm terrified that they won't let me go to class!! What do you girls recommend to help me gain some weight? Any particular foods? I'm not anorexic, but I cannot eat for most of the day due to medical reasons. Help!!!! |

This is not a problem I've ever had, but you could try drinking ensure nutrition shakes in addition to what you normally eat. My grandma has a low appetite and sometimes gets underweight, so she drinks ensure. Here's the ensure website in case you want to look at the nutrition. http://ensure.com/

We just did a nutrition unit in health and we learned that the best way to gain weight in a healthy way is to eat foods that are high in calories but also in nutrients. I can't think of many specific examples except for carbs like bread and pasta. Also, make sure to work on your muscles so that the weight you gain is muscle mass.
Good luck, and I hope it works out! |

Maybe you should ask your parents to take you to a doctor. Either he (or she) will be able to tell you how to gain weight safely, or they'll tell your parents that you're healthy and they won't have to worry.

Hey Clare,
I found a link that may help you or get an idea on how to gain weight the healthy way. I hope you get better!!!! I would hate for you to quit ![]() Just make sure you eat a balanced diet. No junk food just high calorie healthy food like avacados, nuts, fish, whole milk, etc. http://nutrition.about.com/od/dietsf...GainWeight.htm |

Thanks so much, everyone!!!
Okay, to address a few points: the reason I am unable to eat for most of the day is a medication I have to take, which kills any desire for food (actually, it makes me feel sick if confronted with it!) so I normally don't eat lunch or much breakfast. Another thing is that I don't consume much animal protein and very little fat, because I'm (mostly) pesco-vegetarian due to health and moral reasons. I actually HAVE been to a doctor, who pretty much said 'eat carbohydrates and meat' (*retches at the thought of eating animal flesh*) and left it at that. :S You girls have been ever so much more helpful! I half-suspect there's at least one dietician among you, haha. My parents have this funny notion that dance class is what's causing me to lose and be unable to gain back all this weight! (actully, my dad's 'no pasta unless it's served to you at mealtime' policy is more culpable, if you ask me. He has dumb notions.) XD Again, thanks so much!!! |

I don't know if this is possible Clare, but could you eat something plain like rice at breakfast and lunch just so that you are eating something? |

I can totally understand your medication reason because I'm the same at the moment- I have tonsillitis and my comp is tomorrow!! But what I'm trying to do is eat a very small portion of food every few hours. So in the morning, I'll try to eat half a slice of bread and then a while after, I'll eat three or four strawberries and then after lunch I'll have a handful of salad. For dinner split bits of it up (so 5 spoons of pasta at a time) and that way you're eating and keeping energy levels up!
Hope I helped and good luck (: |
