Default Fundraising idea - Need advice!!!

As a college student, I do not have a parent to assist me with any funds for Irish Dance. I pay my tuition and for all of my supplies (shoes, socks, dress, etc.) by myself. Unfortunately right now I can't even afford the rent for my apartment... so I'm trying to come up with a way to generate the funds for myself!

I live in a busy college town, so I was thinking about hosting my own dance show. I know that local places can "hire" the school I dance for, and the money from that goes towards the school... but I need money for myself! I was thinking about having a small event... have friends donate food, have some raffle baskets, a 50/50, and cap the evening off with some Irish music and performance. Two friends of mine both play the violin, but I don't want to do all of the dancing by myself... So I was thinking about asking some people from my dance class if they would mind volunteering for one night, to help me out.

What I want to know is, do you guys think that would be rude of me to ask them to help me raise money for myself? Do you think that would be going "behind" my teacher's back (even though I intend to ask him for permission), seeing as how normally his dancers raise money for the whole school? I'd really love to do this, especially because I LOVE putting together shows... but I don't want to upset anyone in the process.

I don't really know, usually a fundraiser is for some sort of humanitarian cause or group with a goal. As an entering college student, I know that many universities offer jobs in university run buildings with very flexible hours if that is a concern for you. In this situation, I would likely look for a job which would probably be a better long term solution to this issue.
