I think some people look better in 'glitz and glam.'

However, I also think some people (and that most certainly includes myself!) look better in very simple dresses. I love the dresses in Riverdance, because most of them are very simple, and rely on the quality of the fabric and the beauty of the design- as in the way they're stitched together, not what's embroidered on them!

I'm going to end up making my own solo, when I hit championship, so I'll probably end up looking like the dancers during Reel Around The Sun. XD

the style of dresses have changed so much over the years... the thing i hate the most is the fake tan and make up x
if you look into the history of irish dancing, the only characteristic we follow is curly hair which is now a wig!

Im lucky to carry a natural tan all year round on my legs but i do not over do it with the make up and i still curl my hair in curlers or rags two days before a competition... i only have a wig for class performances and Bad Hair Days...

i love irish dancing but i hate the way it has changed that the way you look and who made you dress is the most importnat thing when you are being marked x it should be your dancing not because you have crystals on your socks which are being held up by sock glue x

I agree with you! But I would disagree about the sock glue ... that stuff is VERY useful. Apart from that, yes, you're right. It shouldn't be about the dresses.

Fake-Tan should be a problem.
We should wear our Skin Color proudly.
And Sock Glue is very useful and it adds a well groomed factor because who wants to have Socks falling down and look not that nice while YOU are dancing?
But otherwise I LOVE everything about Irish Dance and I would not change it for the World.

The only make up I use is to enhance my natural features but I agree. Some girls I dance with have clown make up. As for the tanning, I tan my legs slightly because I am from Canada and I'm pale as can be. As for the dress, I believe we still are being marked for the dance but it is kind of fun to have a solo dress that is a bit out there (if you know what I mean). I think it adds to the unique-ness of Irish Dance. My friend's mom is a dance judge and she tells me never to wear crystals on my socks because it makes it harder for the judges to watch.

I think it's fun to get all glitzed up, and yes it does boost up your confidence. When I see pale girls with no makeup on, no wig and a traditional dress it doesn't bother me. So why should it bother you if you see a tanned girl with a wig and makeup?

In An Comhdhail you have to be under 10 before you get a solo dress. Before that you have to dance in your class costume, I think its good so they know they have earned the dress!
