The Light Fantastic
Story of Your Design
The Light Fantastic is a dress born of storms, sunlight, and a daughter's fondness for rainbow colors. A rainbow is not simply color—it is light fractured, transformed, and made visible only because of the rain. It appears when the sun is at your back and your eyes are lifted toward the horizon. A rainbow can be seen superimposed over gray skies, often soaring above them, proof that even amid the rain, beauty takes flight.
So it has been for my daughter. This year, she has lived through a spectrum of experiences—loss and sorrow, but also deep wells of love and care— darkness and light. Each challenge has refracted into something new, shaping her with resilience, grace, and strength. She is learning not only to withstand the storm but to dance in the rain—making rainbows; I see her beginning to lift out of the shadows, and carrying her light toward the horizon.
On the back, swans rise in flight—symbols of transformation, endurance, and elegance. Swans are creatures of dual strength: serene on the surface yet powerful in their wings. They glide across uncertain waters and soar into open skies, embodying both grace and fierce resilience. In this design, they mirror her journey—lifting beyond hardship, embracing her strength, and becoming braver and more fully herself with every step.
Its name, The Light Fantastic, carries a double meaning: the rainbow itself, light made fantastic, and the dance it inspires. As Milton wrote, to “trip the light fantastic” is to dance with imagination, nimbleness, and delight. This design embodies both truths: the rainbow after the storm, and the dancer who brings that light to life.
To my rainbow-bright girl: radiant and resilient, ready to take flight—dancing the light fantastic. I love you no matter the weather.
Always,
Mom
