County Wicklow - One of Ireland's Most Unexpected Wow Moments

Every year on the Irish Dancing Magazine Cultural Tour of Ireland, we visit Powerscourt Gardens in County Wicklow. And each time, I find myself waiting for the same reaction.

As guests make their way through Powerscourt House and step onto the terrace overlooking the gardens, they stop in their tracks.

Then comes the inevitable response:

"Wow."

Ranked No. 3 among the World's Top 10 Gardens by National Geographic, Powerscourt has earned international acclaim. Yet what continues to surprise me is how many visitors arrive with little idea of the breathtaking view waiting beyond the entrance.

Perhaps that's what makes Powerscourt so special.

From the outside, there is little indication of the spectacular landscape that awaits. Visitors purchase their tickets, walk through the house, and then suddenly emerge onto a terrace overlooking sweeping lawns, elegant fountains, ancient trees, and beautifully manicured gardens stretching toward the horizon. In the distance, the distinctive peak of the Great Sugar Loaf Mountain completes a view that feels almost too perfect to be real.

It's a genuine wow moment.

Located just 45 minutes south of Dublin, Powerscourt makes an easy day trip from the city. Visitors with a rental car will find the drive straightforward, while those without a vehicle can reach nearby Enniskerry by public transportation and continue on to the estate by taxi.

What I love most about Powerscourt is that the experience doesn't end with that first breathtaking view. The estate invites visitors to wander. Around every corner you'll discover something new—formal gardens, tranquil ponds, hidden pathways, colourful flower displays, and quiet places where you can simply pause and enjoy the beauty around you.

Oddly enough, one of my favourite spots is the small pet cemetery tucked away on the estate grounds.

While most visitors come for the grand vistas and magnificent gardens, I'm always drawn to this peaceful corner. The simple memorials to beloved dogs and ponies offer a touching glimpse into the lives of the families who once called Powerscourt home. It's a reminder that behind the grandeur was a real family, with the same love for their pets that many of us share today.

One of the things I appreciate about Powerscourt is that it's easy to spend several hours there. After exploring the grounds, many visitors enjoy a stop at the café overlooking the gardens before browsing the shops housed within Powerscourt House. From Irish gifts and artisan products to books and souvenirs, it's the perfect place to relax, enjoy a cup of tea, and take a little piece of Ireland home with you.

Perhaps that's what makes Powerscourt so memorable. It combines stunning beauty with unexpected moments of discovery. The famous terrace view captures your attention, but it's often the smaller details and hidden corners that stay with you long after you've left.

For many guests on our annual Irish Dancing Magazine Cultural Tour, Powerscourt becomes one of the highlights of the journey. They know they're visiting a famous estate, but few expect to be quite so captivated by it. Then they step onto the terrace, take in the view, and understand exactly why Powerscourt remains one of our favourite places to visit year after year.
