El Rey en la Oscuridad
Story of Your Design
As a Mexican-American who has Irish dancing in her heart, I decided to take inspiration from the storytelling of Lucha Libre (Mexican wrestling), which consists of técnicos (good guys), who follow the rules, and rudos (bad guys), who go by their own. El Rey en la Oscuridad (“The King in the Dark” in Spanish) is a rudo, who was a literal black sheep who didn’t feel like he belonged with his white flock, but worked hard for himself to gain the strength he needed to fight against the cruel, difficult world. The red flames are what illuminate el Rey, including his fiery eyes, in pitch-black, and the gold in his crown and the ram-horn-textured sleeves symbolizes superiority. Like el Rey, I’ve always felt socially excluded, but with newfound strength, all eyes are going to be on this brave, limitless warrior who can dance!
